Fluorescent test setup
I designed and created an interesting test setup for a Veranex project. It required visualizing small features (~100um), moving at slow speeds (<10uL/min flow) over a long period of time (days). I used a low-flow syringe pump to set the flow rate, a pressure transsucer and DAQ to collect pressure data, a microscope with a time-lapse feature, and fluorescent beads to help visualize flow. Test fixture included a light and filter for exciting and viewing bead fluorescence. At right and below are photos of different setups with fluorescent beads in the system and corresponding pressure plot. The beads are around 100um in diameter.

Spectrophotometry
I designed a test for measuring chemical release from a device. I sampled fluid outside the device at various timepoints, mixed the samples with a compound that reacted with the chemical by turning a color, measured the color of the samples using a table-top spectrophotometer. Photo at right is triplicates of samples from different time points: the darker samples have the highest concentration of the target chemical. It was interesting to learn about this technique, figure out the standards, and adjust test parameters to use the full range of the spectrophotometer.
